Space Forge, a startup based in the UK, successfully launched its ForgeStar‑1 satellite aboard SpaceX’s Transporter‑14 rideshare mission. The small satellite is now in low Earth orbit, conducting early experiments to manufacture semiconductors in microgravity and near-zero temperatures, conditions that can’t be replicated on Earth.
The goal is to improve the purity and efficiency of materials used in AI chips, quantum computing, and high-performance data centers. This first mission won’t return physical samples, but it lays the groundwork for future versions of ForgeStar that can bring finished products back to Earth.
In-space manufacturing is a growing frontier in commercial space activity. If successful, ForgeStar could mark the beginning of a new era where high-value goods are produced in orbit, not just launched from it.
